The focus of this free workshop will be on applying the GBI vision, design principles, street prototypes and design guidelines to the specific land use and street characteristics in the City of Sunnyvale. The workshop is timely in that the city, located in Santa Clara County, is currently updating its General Plan with El Camino Real identified as a major change area with key opportunity sites. The objective is to show city planners how the GBI guiding principles can be translated from vision to reality by applying the concepts in the Multimodal Corridor Plan and Street Design Toolbox to specific conditions and situations in the city.

The workshop will discuss a recent major product of the GBI: The Grand Boulevard Multimodal Transportation Corridor Plan (2010), a comprehensive planning and implementation guide that translates the GBI vision into tangible development strategies and design concepts. The workshop will also discuss the just published Street Design Toolbox that was developed from the Corridor Plan to illustrate design prototypes for transforming the State Highway into a multi-modal facility that will support transit, pedestrians and mixed use development.

The workshop will be presented by speakers with expertise in transportation planning, economic development and new urbanism. A representative from the Valley Transportation Authority, a regional transportation agency serving Santa Clara County, will discuss the preliminary plans for bus rapid transit on a major segment of the corridor. A speaker from Strategic Economics, a renowned consultant firm that has been integrally involved in the GBI from its beginning, will discuss land use prototypes for clustering jobs and housing at activity nodes along the corridor. A representative from Reinventing America will present successful models for higher-density corridor development that are applicable to the environmental settings along El Camino Real. Following the presentations, sufficient time will be set aside for an interactive discussion with workshop participants.

This workshop is a collaborative effort involving many public agencies, non-profit organizations and advocacy groups. Sponsors include Urban Habitat, Reinventing America, Grand Boulevard Initiative, Strategic Economics, Greenbelt Alliance, Valley Transportation Authority, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Sunnyvale Cool, City of Sunnyvale and APA California Northern.
